Turtle Lake Township is located in the northwestern part of Cass County, Minnesota. It is comprised of two adjacent townships with an approximate area of 48.67 square miles and much of the area is comprised of the Chippewa National Forest, the Leech Lake Indian Reservation, and Leech Lake.

The miles of wooded shoreline along the many lakes within the Township draw seasonable residents back to their lake homes and vacation cottages - and draw tourists to visit resorts, campgrounds, recreational trails and area attractions to relax in the beauty and serenity of the north woods.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department provide law enforcement to the township residents. The township is a member of the Walker Area Joint Fire Department and it contracts annually with the Hackensack Area Fire & Rescue Department for fire and emergency service for township residents.

The townships’s population estimate in 2022 is 815 and the household estimate is 324. The top major ancestry groups in Turtle Lake are Native American: 30%, German: 20.8%, Irish: 11%, Norwegian: 8.3%, and Swedish: 7%. Although many township residents live close enough to Walker to consider Walker their address, many residents in the southern portion of the township identify Hackensack as their address. The Village of Old Agency, located on the northeastern corner of the northern part of the township, is another identifiable community within the township.
